This collection of stories describes hunts in Africa and in the mountain sheep country of the North American West. Accounts of the hardest African hunts and stories about mountain sheep hunting, which always is challenging and sometimes is hair-raising, were brought together to emphasize the major theme of the book: you can do the hard hunts in your 60s, 70s, and 80s with only a little more stress and strain than if you had done them in your 40s if you devote a little time and effort every day to staying in proper physical condition to do them. The author describes how he has kept in condition to do the hard hunts into his 80s in Part I of this book.
These stories describe hunts for, among many other animals, the Grand Slam of North American Wild Sheep and some of Africa’s most coveted species, such as the Big Five, the Dangerous Seven, and the Nine Spiral-Horned African Antelope. Four of these hunts took place in Tanzania, three in Cameroon, two in Zimbabwe, and one each in Botswana, Namibia, Republic of South Africa, Ethiopia, and Zambia in a wide variety of habitats from the miombo to the equatorial rainforest. All but one of the mountain sheep hunts took place in Alaska, Canada, or Mexico. The additional account of an Argali hunt in Mongolia emphasizes the universal nature of wild sheep hunting no matter where it is done.
The author was between 70 and 83 years of age when he completed the mountain sheep hunts and was between 76 and nearly 86 when hunting in Africa. The author’s thesis is that if he could do it, you can too.
This is a must read for would-be mountain sheep hunters and African hunters ready to graduate from plains game and Cape buffalo to more esoteric African game and habitats.
